INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY AND ENTERTAINMENT LAW SOCIETY

Welcome

The Intellectual Property and Entertainment Law Society (IPELS) of New York University Law School is a student run organization devoted to the exploration of emerging legal issues in the context of technology, the Internet, arts, and entertainment.

Intellectual property law (patent, copyright, and trademark) is having an increasingly profound effect on each of these fields. IPELS provides a forum for education, discussion, and debate in these areas by sponsoring monthly student-led meetings with technologists, entrepeneurs, entertainers, lawyers, and professors.

The following is a small sampling of events and topics that we hope to cover in the next year:

Internet
privacy and First Amendment issues
cybersquatting: domain names and impact of trademark law
.com startups and the role of lawyers
ownership of information rights (stock symbols, sports scores, online forums)

Entertainment
sampling and licensing of music
the battle over online music distribution
sports law: hot issues

Arts
Afternoon for the Arts
copyright issues in art law

Technology
patenting of software and business methods
the ongoing encryption debate
biotechnology and genetics: hot issues
