ELS 2008-2009 Board Applications

Want to serve on next year's ELS Board? Please fill out the board application form and email to Nathan at nathan.foster@nyu.edu or Katie at katie.ghilain@nyu.edu by Friday, April 11, 2008.

The following board positions from this year are open, and make-up of the board is flexible if next year's group wants to change around positions.

Co-Chairs : The two co-chairs oversee the organization, set-up board meetings and the initial socials for 1Ls, help board members as needed, and provide impetus for getting things done.

Treasurer : The treasurer creates the budget, and ensures that all of the organization's activities stay within that budget.

Speakers : The speakers chair plans and sets-up a wide variety of speakers and events during the academic year, including career-oriented and academically oriented programs. This includes brainstorming and inviting speakers, and planning the event, including food, room reservations, etc.

Community Service : The community service chair coordinates several projects a year to give back to the community beyond the law school. In addition, the Community Service committee aims to reduce the environmental impacts of the law school's operation by working with the administration, staff, and other university student organizations to identify and implement changes in institutional behavior.

Outdoor events : The outdoors chair organizes hikes and other outdoor events open to the entire NYU Law School community.

Careers : ELS sponsors a summer internship panel in the fall to provide information and networking opportunities for 1Ls and others interested in environmental careers where 2Ls and 3Ls speak about their internship experiences. In the spring, ELS sponsors a career panel and reception featuring local practitioners in the public, private and non-profit sectors. The careers chair also coordinates with PILC and OCS to ensure environmental job opportunities are available. The chair also coordinates the formal evening symposia hosted the ELS once or twice a year. Last year ELS planned a fall event with the Rocky Mountain Institute, an environmental think-tank, to conduct a high profile panel on the end of American oil dependence. Previous year's co-sponsored symposia have focused on environmental justice and extended producer responsibility and drew 50-80 students.

Legal Projects : The legal projects chair tries to provide 1Ls with substantive experience by coordinating research opportunities with public interest environmental organizations and professors.

Communications : The communications chair researches and distributes a regular (weekly) e-mail which gives relevant information to the local law student community and makes changes to the ELS website.
