Gráinne de Búrca joins US Supreme Court justices at seminar with judges from the European Court of Justice

Last week, Professor Gráinne de Búrca and other noted academics presented at the “Luxembourg Forum,” a meeting between the justices from the US Supreme Court and the European Court of Justice.

The forum, held from February 9 through 12 in Luxembourg, was designed to facilitate exchange of views and discussion of matters of common interest between the two courts.

In addition to de Búrca, Daniel Halberstam of Michigan Law School and George Bermann of Columbia Law School presented. Professors Harold Koh of Yale Law School and Sarah Cleveland of Columbia Law School, and John Attanasio '79, a distinguished visiting fellow at NYU Law, moderated discussions during the forum. Gráinne de Búrca spoke on the topic of standards of review and judicial discretion.

Attending from the Supreme Court were Chief Justice John Roberts, accompanied by Justice Anthony Alito, Justice Stephen Breyer, and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, as well as former Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.

Many of the 28 European Court judges and several Advocates General attended, including President of the European Court of Justice Vassilios Skouris and Vice President Koen Lenaerts.
