Robert Howse, the Lloyd C. Nelson Professor of International Law, presented his lecture “Man of Peace: Rehearing the Case Against Leo Strauss” on October 2 in Vanderbilt Hall’s Greenberg Lounge. Professor Howse took issue with the popular perception of Strauss as an advocate of imperialism and a warlike foreign policy. According to Howse, Strauss, a German-Jewish émigré philosopher who is frequently cited an inspiration to the Bush administration, was actually a supporter of pluralism and stressed the importance of international law as a check against aggressive nations.
