LL.M New York

International Legal Studies

The Big Picture
NYU School of Law offers perhaps the broadest and most diverse set of international law resources and opportunities of any law school in the world. The faculty is unsurpassed in the depth of its knowledge and engagement in this field. The curriculum is unmatched in the strength and variety of the course offerings. Students benefit from the excellent New York location, including frequent contacts with the United Nations, courses taught by top practitioners at major law firms and NGOs, and the many high-level visitors coming to meet with students.

The LL.M. in International Legal Studies is designed both to deepen knowledge of fundamental structures in international law and to provide opportunities for students to undertake research and build expertise in cutting-edge issues involving global governance, cross-border transactions, and transnational legal strategies. Students are encouraged, through courses, research, and practical engagement, to develop innovative connections between traditionally separate spheres such as human rights, international economic law, transnational commercial law, the law and institutions of war and post-conflict reconstruction, and theories of international law and global justice.

Focus on Colloquia
A testament to NYU’s strength in shaping the current and future academic discussion in the field of international law, professors from a variety of universities who have recently published a new work, or are preparing a piece for publication, present in our colloquia for avid critique and debate with our students and faculty. LL.M.s in this program may have as many as three or more colloquia to choose from that are directly related to their degree: the Hauser Colloquium on Globalization and Its Discontents, the Law and Security Colloquium, and the Institute for International Law and Justice Colloquium.

Post-Graduation Fellowships and More
Through some of the Law School’s centers, programs and institutes, LL.M. students may apply to receive post-graduation funding in support of internships, clerkships and fellowships that advance their careers. Many of these opportunities would be of interest to students in the International Legal Studies program, such as:
