James Madison Weekly Newsletter

Welcome to the online version of the James Madison Newsletter! Every week, LL.M., J.S.D., and Exchange students will receive an email from the Office of Graduate Affairs detailing important information regarding events, registration deadlines, academic reminders, and any other substantial matters which require attention. Please look out for this weekly email and read it carefully, as it will be the primary correspondence you receive from the Office of Graduate Affairs. These newsletters will also be posted and archived on the Graduate Affairs website. Please note that you are still responsible for the contents of emails sent from other departments at the Law School as well as special, time-sensitive bulletins the Office of Graduate Affairs may periodically send.

1. Exam & Paper Writing Resources
a. Fall 2009 LL.M. Exam Workshops:

I. Monday, November 23 - 12:25 p.m. - 1:50 p.m.
II. Monday, November 30 - 12:25 p.m. - 1:50 p.m.
Both Sessions will take place in Vanderbilt Hall, Classroom 210
The workshops cover:
    * how to use course outlines
    * how to use practice exams
    * test-taking skills, including careful review of the question, outlining, time management, issue identification, use of authority, and tone
    * critique of sample exam answers
    * the use of study groups
    * the grading curve
    * any questions you may have

b. PDF Exam Guide from Academic Services
You should have received by e-mail a PDF Exam Guide from Academic Services. It is Very important that you read it!

c. Paper Writing Resource
We would like to make you aware of an online resource that might help you with paper writing.  Go to http://www.law.nyu.edu/students/index.htm On left sidebar you will see the heading "Student Life" and underneath it "Student Writing." There is helpful material there on research and writing that may be of help to you in writing a directed research or seminar paper.

d. Access to Past Exams via the Law Library
Did you know that you can view past exams via the Law Library? Just go to http://www.law.nyu.edu/library/libraryservices/studentservices/index.htm- click on past exams and after entering your net ID and password you can search cours titles to find past exams to help you study.

2. Upcoming Events
a. International Scholar Speaker Series with Dr. Fareda Banda
The Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS) at New York University invites you to attend the International Scholar Speaker Series, Part II – Fall 2009.

Topic:            Women's Rights in Africa: Progress and Challenges
Speaker:        Dr. Fareda Banda
Venue:           Kimmel Center for University Life Room 905-907
Dr. Banda is currently a visiting scholar with NYU’s School of Law where she is teaching courses in human rights and African law. She also teaches in the School of Law at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. Raised in Zimbabwe, where she got her first law degree, she was the first African woman to receive her doctorate in Law from the University of Oxford. Her talk will involve a discussion of the progress, developments and challenges of women's rights in Africa, drawing upon cases in Niger and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

3. Important Registration Reminder - Health Center Block on Spring Registration
If you have received a message that the Health Center has put a block on your record please take care of this immediately by contacting the The NYU Health Center http://www.nyu.edu/shc  If you are a continuing student, the block prevents you from participating in the Spring 2010 Add/Drop Registration which will begin December 1, 2009.  In addition the block will prevent the processing of any transcripts requests that you make.

4. Academic Opportunities
a. Available LL.M. position with the Spring 2010 Family Defense Clinic
There is a position available for a transfer or LL.M. student in the Spring 2010 Family Defense Clinic.  Interested students should send application materials to Yvette Bisono directly, at bisonoy@exchange.law.nyu.edu by December 10, 2009.  There are no prerequisites.  The clinic seminar meets on Tuesdays from 2-4 p.m.  For more information about the clinic, consult the course description at http://www.law.nyu.edu/academics/clinics/semester/familydefense/index.htm.
