United Nations Research

IMPORTANT NOTE: The major UN documents needed by legal researchers are available in the law library in print and online; you can locate them by using this guide.

The law library also has a more extensive collection of UN documents in microfiche, United Nations Documents and Publications, covering 1946 to current (with limited documents for the 1980s). Use AccessUN to identify documents in the microfiche by subject, title, UN document symbol, etc. Make a note of the "Readex Year" and UN document symbol because you will need this information to find the fiche in the Media Center cabinets.

The NYU Bobst Library has a large collection of UN documents in paper in its UN Depository--Bobst UN and International Documents Collections.

SECURITY COUNCIL UN Document Symbol S/--

Resolutions and Decisions of the Security Council

Official source for citation:
Resolutions and Decisions of the Security Council [year].
Annual compilation, 1946-. Includes voting information.
Compact Shelves JX1977 A52 R3 Also available in microfiche under the document symbol S/INF/--.

Suggested citation format:
S.C. Res. 1141, U.N. SCOR, 52d Year, Resolutions and Decisions of the Security Council 1997, at 91, U.N. Doc. S/INF/53 (1999).

You also might see this format for the resolution number at the beginning of the citation: S/RES/1141 (1997). The U.N. document symbol at the end of the citation (S/INF/53 in the example above) is the symbol for the pamphlet Resolutions and Decisions of the Security Council [year] that collects all the resolutions and decisions for the year, not the symbol for the individual resolution. The number at the end of S/INF/-- is always one number larger than the number of the SC year (in this example, S/INF/53 is for the 52d year). The date in parentheses at the end of the citation is the publication date of the pamphlet.

Use AccessUN to identify documents in the microfiche by subject, title, UN document symbol, etc. Make a note of the "Readex Year" and UN document symbol because you will need this information to find the fiche in the Media Center cabinets.
