How To Create URL Links To Specific Articles, Cases or Statutes For Use In Blackboard

Faculty and library personnel may want to create links from Blackboard or other web pages to online resources to which students have access.  These resources may be to online journals (ejournals), subscription databases, Lexis & Westlaw, or free databases.

If a resource has multiple URLs, it is recommended that you link to a pdf rather than a non-pdf version of a document.  Therefore, only link to Lexis or Westlaw as a last resort.

Another reason to favor non-Lexis/Westlaw links is because students  will be prompted to enter their Lexis and Westlaw IDs to get to a Lexis/Westlaw link.  This is not the case with other resources.  The only time students will be prompted for authentication when following non-Lexis/Westlaw links is when they are off NYU premises.  They will be prompted for their Netid and password.

For each resource you want to link to, you need to know the URL of the specific case, statute or article.  Follow the instructions below to ascertain the URL of the resource you wish to link to.

Ezproxy
You should also prepend the Ezproxy prefix URL to all links you create to fee-based resources (except for Lexis and Westlaw).  This prefix enables the NYU Proxy Server authentication prompt to pop up when the link is clicked, so that off campus users can authenticate themselves with their NetID and password and be able to use licensed resources off-campus.

The Ezproxy prefix URL is:

https://ezproxy.library.nyu.edu/login?url=

Therefore, if your link to a resource is:

http://www.heinonline.org/HOL/Page?handle=hein.journals/nylr77&id=1054&collection=journals

prepending the Ezproxy URL would give you this link:

https://ezproxy.library.nyu.edu/login?url=http://www.heinonline.org/HOL/Page?handle=hein.journals/nylr77&id=1054&collection=journals

Cambridge Journals Online

The root  URL for a Cambridge Journals Online article is:

http://journals.cambridge.org/article_[pii]

[pii] is the unique identifier for a specific article.  You must browse your way to the article abstract, and pull the [pii] from the prefatory material before the title of the abstract.

For example, the link to 8 Legal Theory 185 is http://journals.cambridge.org/article_S1352325202082022

To create this link go to the Law Library's Journals Page at http://ur8xy7gf3p.search.serialssolutions.com/  Enter "Legal Theory" in the search box, and click on the link to Cambridge Journals Online, volume 8, issue 2.  Then click on the Abstract, NOT THE PDF, for your article.  The [pii] is the number beginning with the letter "S" in the illustration below.  Simply append this number, including the letter "S" to the end of the root URL to create your link. Make sure to prepend https://ezproxy.library.nyu.edu/login?url=  to the URL.
