The Global Leadership Skills Series aims to provide LLM students with "soft" skills that will help them succeed in the workplace and advance their professional development. There are 3 or 4 installments in this series ranging in topics such as networking, effective communication, generating business and cultural competence. Each installment is lead by a different presenter; these may include professors, administrators, practicing lawyers and consultants. Most of the installments take place in the spring—when students are getting ready to enter or re-enter the workplace.
Examples of events from previous years:
Emotional Intelligence (EQ) for Lawyers
Presenter: Vice Dean Jeannie Forrest
EQ, also known as “the other kind of smart,” involves a skill set that many lawyers have come to recognize as the key attribute of true leaders in the legal profession. Increasingly, legal employers are screening candidates based on their demonstrated ability to manage themselves and relationships with others. They want to know that they are hiring someone who has the ability to work well with a broad range of personalities in a variety of settings.
This interactive workshop will help you hone the skills of self-awareness and self-management so that you are better equipped for the professional setting.
Presenter: Thomas Sirinides, OISS Associate Director
Cultural competence is an essential skill in today's workplace. Come to this interactive, informative session. Explore ways in which people are shaped by their cultural backgrounds, and learn about basic resources and skills to help you succeed in culturally diverse settings.
Communication Skills for Lawyers
Presenter: Jeffrey Bannon
Well-developed communication skills are essential to a successful legal practice. In this installment, students will identify their own personal communication style, and learn of their style strengths and blind spots in professional settings. They will also learn how to quickly identify the style of others, and discover how to adjust to that style in important meetings.
Networking - American Style
