International Law, Professor Benedict Kingsbury

The objective of the course is to establish a firm grounding in the sources and techniques of public international law, including customary international law and the law of treaties; to become conversant with the International Court of Justice and other international tribunals; to develop familiarity with the impact of international law in the US legal system, and with US law bearing on such matters as sovereign immunity, acts of foreign states, extra-territorial jurisdiction; to examine the role of international law in shaping behavior in areas such as human rights, environmental protection, war crimes, anti-terrorism measures, and the use of force; to build some appreciation of the role of the United Nations, particularly in peacekeeping, sanctions, and the use of force; to consider differences between states as to the content of international law and the roles of non-state actors; to assess the effects and effectiveness of international law.
