We request that you upload your application materials on the online application in PDF or Word format. Please have your materials ready to upload before completing the application form. You will not be able to save the online application form and return later to upload your materials.
1. Detailed Curriculum Vitae
2. Personal Statement
3. Two Letters of Recommendation
4. Research Proposal with 1 page abstract
5. Statement(s) of Funding
6. TOEFL Score or Statement of English Language Proficiency
7. Recent Publication in English
1. Curriculum Vitae
Applicants must submit a current curriculum vitae or resume that contains complete information on academic institutions, honors, awards, all publications to date and all professional experience (current and previous, including dates of employment and job descriptions).
2. Personal Statement
The personal statement must be limited to 500 words. The applicant should respond to the following questions:
What are your intellectual and professional aspirations? How do you think the appointment as a Hauser Research Scholar will affect your work in the future?
3. Two Letters of Recommendation
The two letters of recommendation should be from academics or legal professionals that can speak authoritatively on the applicant's abilities, specifically as they relate to the applicant's research proposal. Paper recommendations should be placed in a sealed envelope with the recommender's signature across the seal and included in the applicant’s complete materials. Electronic recommendations should be in the form of a PDF, signed by the person writing the letter, and sent to globalvisitors@exchange.law.nyu.edu.
4. Research Proposal with 1 page abstract
A well-developed research proposal is a critical part of the application. All applicants must submit a detailed research proposal that describes research questions, the methodology to be utilized, the expected results of the work, and the projected contribution to the field of inquiry. The research proposal should be preceded by a one-page abstract. The title of the proposal should indicate fully the nature of the research project. The Hauser Research Scholars Program will ensure that all research scholars have an NYU faculty sponsor to supervise and assist their research during their period of residence. If you believe that one or more NYU faculty members would be especially well suited to serve as a faculty sponsor, please include their name(s) at the end of your research proposal. Please be advised however that we cannot guarantee your choice of a faculty sponsor.
5. Statement(s) of Funding
Applicants must list on the application form the sources and amounts of any monies they expect to receive to fund the time spent as a participant in the Hauser Research Scholars Program. We require all applicants to provide documentation from sponsoring organizations detailing the amount and terms of all monies granted during your residency at NYU. If you are currently employed, please submit documentation from your employer stating any remit you will receive. If you will be self-funded (i.e. you are receiving absolutely no support from a sponsoring organization or employer), that fact must be stated in a separate document and submitted with the application.
6. TOEFL Score/Statement of English Language Proficiency
Applicants are expected to have a level of English language proficiency sufficient to write a publishable piece in English and participate in the Global Fellows Forums and other discussions. Command of the English language is vital to active participation in the Program. All fellows will be expected to be able to read, write, speak, and comprehend English to the degree that they are able to interact with colleagues, provide feedback, and present.
For applicants from non-English speaking countries, proof of English language proficiency, specifically oral, reading, writing and listening ability, is required with the following exceptions:
• If the applicant has received a degree from an English-speaking institution, that included examinations in English, the language proficiency requirement is satisfied without further proof;
• If the applicant has published academic works in English, the written language proficiency requirement is satisfied with submission of a copy of one such article. Evidence of oral proficiency may, however, be required.
For all other applicants from non-English speaking countries, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required. Please contact the Educational Testing Service (ETS) for information on scheduling a test date:
