Global Fellows Categories
- Global and Senior Global Research Fellows are tenured or tenure-track academics with a demonstrable background of strong legal scholarship. More senior academics (for example, faculty members tenured for ten years or more) may be designated as Senior Global Research Fellows at the discretion of the selection committee.
- Global and Senior Global Fellows from Practice & Government are government officials, judges, officials from international organizations and lawyers in private practice who wish to take a semester or academic year away from their posts to engage in serious scholarship. More experienced officials and practitioners may be designated as Senior Global Fellows from Practice & Government at the discretion of the selection committee.
- Post-Doctoral Global Fellows are postdoctoral scholars who have attained their doctoral degrees within the past four years (of the application deadline) and who have not yet secured a tenure-track academic appointment at an institution. Certain Post-Doctoral Global Fellows meeting these eligibility requirements may be considered for a merit-based postdoctoral stipend. In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the stipend for this position is US$50,000 for the academic year (or US$25,000 per academic semester), subject to any applicable tax(es). The rate is based on an expected duration of nine months for the academic year (or four to five months for the academic semester).
- Emile Noël Fellows are postdoctoral or tenured academics with a demonstrable background of legal scholarship on the themes prioritized by the Jean Monnet Center for International and Regional Economic Law & Justice.

Application Instructions
Application Deadline
The deadline for receipt of Global Fellows Program application and application materials to participate in the 2024-2025 academic year is January 15, 2024. Except as noted below, applications must be received and completed by this date in order to be considered for participation in the Global Fellows Program for the upcoming year.
Please note that should space still remain available in mid-April, we may at our sole discretion consider applications received past the initial deadline. Strong preference is however given to applications received and completed by the initial deadline.
Online Application
Please complete the online application form and submit the requested materials listed below under "Additional Required Application Materials". When completing the online application form, please note the following:
- New User Registration: Under the "New Users" section, click to register an account before starting your application. After you have registered, you may return to the application page to select "Global Fellows Program" under the "Start an Application" section and indicate for which category within this Program you are applying.
- Global Fellowship Dates: Global Fellowship visits are for:
- Full academic year (September 1, 2024 - May 31, 2025); or
- Fall semester only (September 1, 2024 - December 31, 2024); or
- Spring semester only (January 1, 2025 - May 31, 2025).
- Center Affiliation: Please note that an applicant's selection of center/institute affiliation is an important part of the application process. Fellows are required to affiliate with one of the specialized centers or institutes at NYU School of Law that closely aligns with their research project. Affiliation means the fellow is included in the center or institute’s activities and may be given an affiliated title. Applicants must indicate their preference for center/institute affiliation on the application. Further information about each center and institute may be found at the Centers & Institutes Page.

1. Curriculum Vitae
The curriculum vitae of applicants must contain complete information on academic institutions, honors, awards, all publications to date, and all professional experience (current and previous, including dates of employment and job descriptions).
2. Personal Statement
The personal statement is limited to 500 words. The applicant should respond to the following question:
What are your intellectual and professional aspirations?
3. Letters of Recommendation
The two letters of recommendation should be from academics or legal professionals who can speak authoritatively on the applicant's abilities, specifically as they relate to the applicant's research proposal. Each letter of recommendation must be (A) in the form of a PDF file or a scanned electronic version of a hard copy, (B) signed by the person writing the letter and (C) sent directly by the recommender via email to law.global@nyu.edu.
4. Research Proposal
A well-developed research proposal is a critical part of the application. It is expected that all Global Fellows will be at a stage in their research and writing process where they will be able to complete a piece of publishable scholarship during their time in residence at the Law School. To that end, we require a detailed research proposal that describes the research questions, the methodology to be utilized, the expected results of the work, and the projected contribution to the field of inquiry. The research proposal should be preceded by a one-page abstract, if appropriate. The title of the proposal should indicate fully the nature of the research project. The Global Fellows Program will ensure that all fellows have an NYU faculty sponsor to supervise and assist their research during their period of residence. If you believe that one or more NYU faculty members would be especially well suited to serve as a faculty sponsor, please include their name(s) at the end of your research proposal. Please be advised however that we cannot guarantee your choice of a faculty sponsor.
5. Statement(s) of Funding
We require all applicants to provide documentation from sponsoring organizations detailing the amount and terms of all monies granted during their residency at NYU. Employed applicants must submit documentation from the employer stating any remit they will receive while on sabbatical. Applicants who will be completely self-funded and unsupported (i.e. able to support oneself from personal funds without receiving any financial support from NYU or other sponsoring organization or employer) must submit a statement attesting to that fact.
NOTE: Only certain Post-Doctoral Global Fellows are eligible to be considered for a merit-based, postdoctoral stipend. In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the stipend for this position is US$50,000 for the academic year (or US$25,000 per academic semester), subject to any applicable tax(es). The rate is based on an expected duration of nine months for the academic year (or four to five months for the academic semester). If you are a Post-Doctoral Global Fellow applicant and would like to apply for such stipend funding, please indicate in the (A) online application form and (B) Statement(s) of Funding that you wish to be considered for a merit-based, postdoctoral stipend. Information provided in the Statement(s) of Funding may be used to determine eligibility and amount of stipend, if any.
6. Proof of English Language Proficiency
Applicants are expected to have a level of English language proficiency sufficient to write a publishable piece in English and participate in the Global/Emile Noël Fellows Forums and other discussions. Command of the English language is vital to active participation in the Program. All Fellows will be expected to be able to read, write, speak and comprehend English to the degree that they are able to interact with colleagues, provide feedback and present.
For all applicants, proof of English language proficiency is required. This may be achieved through submission of any of the below:
• A signed statement declaring that English is the applicant's native language;
• Signed documentation of successful completion of a degree from an English-speaking academic institution (such as a diploma or certificate); or
• A copy of the applicant's score(s) from an internationally recognized English language test (such as the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the academic version of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)).
For purposes of application to the Global Fellows Program, we will accept unofficial copies of the applicant's score report. We recommend that test scores be no more than 2 years old.
7. Recent Publication in English
Please include one recent publication in English of no more than 20 pages. Please note that the work must be originally published in English, not translated into English.

Review of Applications and Decision Notification
Successful applicants will have outstanding academic records at all levels of university training and a demonstrated commitment to the advancement of their scholarly project and their future professional life. Standards for admission to the Global Fellows Program are extremely high, but not arbitrary. Candidates may expect to receive a decision in April.
