Global Fellows Program Application Instructions

Program Information

Application Deadline
Applications for the 2010-2011 academic year is March 1, 2010.  See below for detailed program and application information.

Global Fellows Categories

  • Global & Senior Global Research Fellows are post-doctoral or tenured academics with a record of strong legal scholarship.  More senior academics (for example, faculty members tenured for 10 years or more) at the discretion of the selection committee may be designated as Senior Global Research Fellows.
  • Global Fellows from Practice & Government are government officials, judges and lawyers in private practice who wish to take a semester or academic year away from their posts to engage in serious scholarship.
  • Visiting Doctoral Researchers are doctoral candidates enrolled in a doctoral degree program at another institution who wish to benefit from spending one year of their research at NYU School of Law.

Residency Requirement
As the primary mission of the Global Fellows Program is the facilitation of original, publishable legal scholarship, visits are for a full academic year or semester.  All Global Fellows are expected to be in full-time residence during their appointment.  Although visits may extend into the summer, visits for the summer months alone will not be approved.  Fellows may not hold any concurrent appointment or engagement (i.e. practice, fellowships, teaching, etc.) during the full period of residency.  All Fellows are required to attend and present a paper at the Global Fellows Forum, which will be held at intervals throughout the academic year (or the J.S.D. forum for Visiting Doctoral Researchers).  Papers will be considered for publication as a Hauser Global Law School Working Paper.

Faculty Sponsorship
All participants in the Global Fellows Program must have a permanent, full-time member of the New York University School of Law faculty agree to serve as his or her faculty sponsor during the proposed time of residence.  Potential applicants should contact faculty members directly to ask whether they will agree to serve as a faculty sponsor.  Faculty Sponsors support Fellows by providing feedback and critique of their work and offering commentary during their fellows' presentation at the Global Fellows Forum.  If, for any reason, a candidate is unable to secure faculty sponsorship, he or she should contact us at GlobalVisitors@exchange.law.nyu.edu

Affiliation
Fellows in the Global Fellows Program may wish to affiliate with one of the specialized centers or institute at NYU School of Law.  Affiliation means the fellow is included in the center or institute’s activities and may be given an affiliated title, such as the Global Emile Noel Research Fellow, for affiliation with the Jean Monnet Center.  Candidates interested in affiliating with a center or institute, should indicate thusly on the application.  Further information about each centers and institutes can be found at http://www.law.nyu.edu/centers/index.htm

Fees
The fee for participants of the Global Fellows Program is US$7,500 per academic year, US$3,750 per semester.  Waivers may be granted to those who cannot afford to pay this fee.  Petition for fee waivers will be provided following admission to the Global Fellows Program.

Supporting Your Visit
Depending on their personal financial situation, Global Research Fellows and Fellows from Practice & Government may be awarded a stipend up to $20,000 (subject to tax) to help cover the cost of living in New York City during the appointment period.  Applications for a stipend will be made available to appointed candidates following admission to the Program.  All candidates are encouraged to supplement their participation in the Hauser Global Visitors Program by seeking scholarships and grants from other organizations.

Health Insurance
All participants in the Global Fellows Program must have adequate health insurance to cover them and any family members who will accompany them during their stay in the United States.  Participants must make arrangements for health insurance before they arrive in the United States so that they are covered from their date of arrival.  The Hauser office will provide information on obtaining health insurance following admission to the Program.

Visa Information
The Hauser Global Law School Program will sponsor the relevant visa to enter US and remain here for the duration of the appointment.  It is important to note that, in such cases, proof of funding or assets in the amount of US$2,000 per month of residence in the US will be required.  Those traveling with children must demonstrate they possess US$300 per child for each month in the United States, and US$650 per month when traveling with a spouse or partner.  Further information regarding visa requirements will be provided following admission to the Program.

5) Research proposal with one page abstract
6) Statement(s) of funding
7) Statement of support from NYU faculty sponsor
8) TOEFL score/statement of English language proficiency

1. Global Fellows Program Application Form
Applicants must complete all sections of the Global Fellows Program application form and sign where indicated on the last page.  The application must be typed and sent in by email and air mail.  We will not accept handwritten or faxed applications.

2. Curriculum Vitae
The curriculum vitae of applicants must contain complete information on academic institutions, honors, and/or awards, and all professional experience (current and previous including dates of employment and job descriptions).

3. Personal Statement
The personal statement is limited to 500 words.  The applicant should respond to the following question:

What are your intellectual and professional aspirations?

4. Letters of Recommendation
The two letters of recommendation should be from academics or legal professionals that can speak authoritatively on the applicant's abilities, specifically as they relate to the applicant's research proposal.  These recommendations should be placed in a sealed envelope with the recommender's signature across the seal.  Electronic recommendations should be in the form of a PDF and signed by the person writing the letter.  Recommendations by email should be sent directly to globalvisitors@exchange.law.nyu.edu

5. Research Proposal
A well-developed research proposal is a critical part of the application.  It is expected that all Global Fellows will be at a stage in their research and writing process where they will be able to complete a piece of publishable scholarship during their time in residence at the Law School.  To that end, we require a detailed research proposal that describes research questions, the methodology to be utilized, the expected results of the work, and the projected contribution to the field of inquiry.  The research proposal should be preceded by a one-page abstract.  The title of the proposal should indicate fully the nature of the research project.

6. Statement of Funding
We require all applicants to provide documentation from sponsoring organizations detailing the amount and terms of all monies granted during their residency at NYU.  If the applicant is currently employed, he or she must submit documentation from the employer stating any remit he or she will receive while on sabbatical.  If an applicant will be completely self-funded (i.e. receiving absolutely no support from a sponsoring organization or employer), that fact must be stated in a separate document and submitted with the application.

7. Statement of Faculty Sponsorship
Once the applicant has obtained a faculty sponsor from NYU School of Law's permanent, full-time faculty, the applicant must submit a letter of support from the faculty.  The statement is not merely an agreement to sponsor the applicant.  It should provide commentary on the applicant's research proposal and the applicant's potential to contribute to the intellectual community at the Law School.

8. TOEFL Score/Statement of English Language Proficiency
Applicants are expected to have a level of English language proficiency sufficient to write a publishable piece in English and participate in the Global Fellows Forum and other discussions.  Command of the English language is vital to active participation in the Program.  All fellows will be expected to be able to read, write, speak, and comprehend English to the degree that they are able to interact with colleagues, provide feedback, and present at the Global Fellows Forum.

For applicants from non-English speaking countries, proof of English language proficiency, specifically oral, reading, writing and listening ability, is required.  If the applicant has received a degree from an English-speaking institution, that included examinations in English, the language proficiency requirement is satisfied without further proof.  If the applicant has published academic works in English the written language proficiency requirement is satisfied with submission of a copy of one such article.  Evidence of oral proficiency may, however, be required.

For all other applicants from non-English speaking countries, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required.  Please contact the Educational Testing Service (ETS) for information on scheduling a test date: Test of English as a Foreign Language, Educational Testing Service, P.O. Box 6151, Princeton, NJ 08541-6151, www.toefl.org.  For purposes of application to the Global Visitors Program, we will accept unofficial copies of the applicant's TOEFL Score Report.

9. Recent Publication in English
Please include one recent publication in English, no more than 20 pages.  Please note, the work must be originally published in English, not translated into English.

Doctoral students may submit a chapter from their dissertation in lieu of a published piece of work.

Submitting Application Materials
Application materials, including the application form, should be sent via email as PDF and/or Word documents to globalvisitors@exchange.law.nyu.edu.  It is not necessary to send a paper copy of application materials if they have been submitted electronically.

If submitting an application by mail, please make sure that the ALL documents arrive in paper form by the application deadline IN ONE ENVELOPE.  Application materials requested from other sources MUST BE COLLECTED by the applicant for submission with the application materials.

Because application materials are time-sensitive and may be traveling great distances, we highly recommend applicants use an international express courier service, such as UPS, FedEx, or DHL, in lieu of national postal services.  All materials sent for application to the Global Fellows Program should be addressed as follows:

Global Fellows Program
Hauser Global Law School Program
New York University School of Law
245 Sullivan Street, Suite 340
New York, NY 10012
USA

Any questions regarding the Global Fellows Program should be directed to globalvisitors@exchange.law.nyu.edu.

PLEASE NOTE THAT FAXED OR HANDWRITTEN APPLICATIONS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE AND WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.

Review of Applications and Decision Notification
Successful applicants will have outstanding academic records at all levels of university training and a demonstrated commitment to the advancement of their scholarly project and their future professional life.  Standards for admission to the Global Fellows Program are extremely high, but not arbitrary.  Candidates may expect to receive a decision on or about April 30, 2010.
