General Information
The Hauser Global Law School Program and the Office of Graduate Affairs sponsor the annual Vanderbilt Speaker Series to benefit scholars in their academic and career pursuits. Each semester's speakers are well-established academicians and legal professionals in their respective fields.
Many political theorists and commentators consider the existence of an independent legal profession, along with an independent judiciary, a pre-condition of the rule of law that is a core element of a democratic society and essential to the proper functioning of the economy. But, what role do the members of the legal profession see themselves playing in society? What aspects of their professional life do they connect with broad societal goals? In the academic year 2009-2010 the Vanderbilt Speaker Series discussions will explore what it means to be a member of the legal profession and to serve as a lawyer in an increasingly global and complex environment. Each of our invited guests will be a distinguished faculty member or alumnus who will discuss his or her life and legal career, and more broadly the evolution of his or her conception of legal practice and of the role of lawyers within a particular industry, sector or within society at large.
Formal invitations will be sent to scholars via email during the academic year. Students are expected to RSVP for these luncheon events.
