Budget and Budgeting

Budget
Students come to New York University School of Law from varied lifestyles but the student expense budget reflects a simple lifestyle; that of a graduate student. The Office of Student Financial Services develops student expense budgets that estimate a student's annual projected educational expenses, including:

Tuition
Fees
Living Expenses (includes housing)
Books
Health Insurance

This budget governs the total amount of aid (loans or a combination of grants and loans) that is available to a student in any given year. Students may not borrow in excess of the approved budget.

Budget Adjustments
We realize that students come to the Law School from varied backgrounds, experiences, and lifestyles; however, the student expense budget allows for a simple lifestyle—that of a graduate student. If a student has legitimate educational expenses that cause him/her to exceed his/her student budget, the Office of Student Financial Services can adjust a budget once appropriate documentation is reviewed and approved.

Students requesting a budget adjustment must complete the Request for Budget Increase form and submit it to the Office of Student Financial Services for processing. This worksheet is required and becomes part of your student financial aid file. NOTE: The Request for Budget Increase form will be available October 2008.
