Graduate Programs
The Graduate Division of New York University School of Law is among
the largest and most intellectually diverse in the nation. In addition
to the general LL.M. program, there are specialized graduate programs
in corporation, international legal studies, labor and employment
law, public service law, trade regulation, taxation, and international
taxation. The J.S.D. program gives students considerable flexibility
within certain defined parameters. Lastly, our Advanced Professional Certificate programs in Taxation and Law & Business provide graduate training without the requirements of our degree programs.
The general goal of graduate studies in law is to enable students
who have already earned a first degree in law (J.D. or LL.B.) to
enhance their theoretical understanding and to develop their professional
skills to the fullest degree. The graduate programs draw particular
strength from their close relationship to the J.D. program: graduate
students take courses with J.D. students, and the resulting exchange
of ideas is beneficial for both groups. The Graduate Division also
benefits from the Law School's location in New York City, which
makes it possible to attract distinguished faculty from an exceptionally
broad range of specialization. Graduate students in all specialties
take a combination of required and elective courses, including traditional
classes and seminars. Successful completion of an LL.M. degree qualifies
foreign attorneys to take the New York Bar examination.
