2014 New Appellate Judges Seminar

July 13-18, 2014

Co-Sponsored by the Dwight D. Opperman Institute of Judicial Administration (IJA) and New York University School of Law, in cooperation with the Federal Judicial Center's Orientation for New Federal Appellate Judges.

IJA invites applications to attend the 2014 New Appellate Judges Seminar. This program is designed for, and open only to, judges with no more than four years of experience on federal courts of appeal, state supreme courts, and state intermediate courts of appeal. The IJA Seminars have been conducted every year since 1959 and have been attended by appellate judges from virtually every state and federal appeals court.

Curriculum:

The Seminar curriculum combines practical training for new appellate judges with exposure to current issues of substantive law. The sessions will be taught by a distinguished faculty of jurists and academics; please refer to the 2013 Seminar Agenda for an example of typical Seminar topics. Seminar sessions are informal and interactive, with the faculty leading discussions rather than delivering lectures. It is very important that program participants attend all sessions and remain through the end of the program. Approximately 23 hours of continuing legal education credit is available.

Location and Lodging:

The working sessions are held in NYU School of Law, located in New York City's Greenwich Village. Lodging can be arranged with a variety of hotels that range in price from $235 to $400 or more per night. We will send hotel and group rate information directly to program participants in March 2014. Please do not make any non-refundable hotel or airline reservations before then.  Also, please note that while we negotiate block room rates, IJA does not make any hotel or travel reservations.

Travel and Subsistence:

Each judge will be responsible for his or her own travel and living expenses. For help in defraying these expenses, judges should contact the staff responsible for judicial training in their courts.

The Federal Judicial Center will cover certain costs for Article III federal appellate judges. If applicable, please contact Trudy Walter of the Federal Judicial Center at 202-502-4058 or twalter@fjc.gov for guidelines.

Entertainment:

The first event of the Appellate Judges Seminar is scheduled for Sunday evening, July 13, permitting an open weekend to take advantage of Broadway theaters and other New York City attractions. Most sessions end by 4:30 p.m.  In addition, IJA organizes an optional theater event and dinner.

Applications:

Since we receive many more applications than we can accept each year, and we aim for a diverse representation of courts and regions, we regret that we cannot accept all interested applicants. We strive to make room for all interested judges within a year of application, if possible. Applications should be received by April 18, 2014, and acceptance letters will be mailed in March and April. The application form can be mailed, faxed, or e-mailed to the address below. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us.

Tuition Fee:

There is a tuition fee of $1,000 for the program, which covers instruction, course materials, the opening dinner and daytime meals during the Seminar.
