Class of 1981
Peter K. Anglum ’81 - I have worked in NYC since graduation, the first few years with firms that no longer exist (Casey, Lane & Mittendorf, and Hale, Russell & Gray), a brief stint at Winthrop Stimson, and have been at Thelen Reid & Priest since 1986. I am a partner in the Business Group focused on private equity/venture capital transactions and finance. My wife, Angela, and I married after our first year of law school, and we will be celebrating our 27th anniversary later this year. Angela is a lawyer and is Vice President Legal Affairs and Corporate Secretary for The Home Insurance Company in New York . We have raised two boys (Cameron (18), and Bradford (15)), and after living in Manhattan for 20 years, moved to Mountain Lakes , New Jersey where we now live.
We would love to travel more for pleasure, something we have not been able to do with work and family responsibilities.
My favorite NYU memory is after finals midday blowout parties at Austa Devlin's apartment. The neighbors must have thought we were nuts.

Christopher G. Arnold ’81 - After Sloan White and Chris Arnold graduated from law school, they fell in love, got married and moved to San Francisco . Ever since then, Chris has practiced real estate law and Sloan has worked in-house at a shipping company. The thing they miss most about New York City is cold sesame noodles. You can contact them at sloanandchris@comcast.net.
Jerry Balsam ’81 - After law school, in chronological order, I worked for a small law firm, clerked for two federal judges, worked for a big law firm (Willkie Farr), went in-house (NYNEX), and have been at a hedge fund (Gabriel Capital Group) for the past eight years.
I was happily married to the former Joy Rochwarger. Tragically, Joy was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma seven months after we were married and passed away another seven months after that. You may read tributes to and view photos of Joy at http://www.atid.org/joy/joy.asp. Joy's family and I have raised money for a scholarship fund in her memory, which I hope will be a fitting tribute to someone who packed decades of achievement into way too short a life.
My favorite memory of NYU was something that happened in Graham Hughes's first-year Legal Institutions class. I had been a Philosophy major in college and I enjoyed Professor Hughes, so I ate the stuff up, but the class was not universally popular. One day, as half the class slept through the proceedings, Professor Hughes posed a rhetorical question: "The issue, then, is whether a legal orgasm, I mean organism, can survive if...." The half of the class that had been awake burst into laughter, as I suppose we might do even now at our rather more mature ages. The other half asked: "What did he say? What did he say?"

Carl Belding (M.C.J. ’81) has died at the age of 51. His next of kin are his wife Ursula and two children, Adrian and Olivia.
Carl was born and raised in Sweden. After having graduated from the University of Stockholm with degrees in both law and business administration, he studied at the NYU School of Law. He became a member of the New York State Bar shortly after receiving his degree.
Carl's first job after NYU Law was at IBM, where he remained for nearly 25 years. Many people who met him in his professional life during the IBM years, particularly the later years, saw him as Big Blue through and through.
His first position with IBM was in the law department at IBM's corporate headquarters in Armonk, New York. He held various positions in the IBM law department in the United States and Europe, the last one being vice president and assistant general counsel with responsibility for Europe, Middle East and Africa as well as for sales and distribution worldwide. Carl was the first non-American to attain such a high level within IBM's law department.
In early 2006 Carl left IBM to become chief legal officer of Finnish telecom giant Nokia, based just outside Helsinki, Finland. Carl held this position at the time of his death.
Carl's outstanding professional record speaks for itself. No Swede that I know of has reached as far in the international in-house counsel world.
Carl met his wife Ursula, also a lawyer, in Paris in the mid-eighties. They married shortly thereafter and had three children, Adrian, Florian and Olivia. Sadly, Florian passed away earlier this year after a fight with leukemia.
Carl was very caring. He cared for his family but also for his many friends. We are many who will miss him very much. He leaves a huge void.
Stefan De Geer (M.C.J. 1982)

Blair G. Brown ’81 - My wife Susan Gerone and I are the proud parents of four boys. After clerking and working as a public defender, I joined Zuckerman Spaeder, a litigation and white collar criminal defense boutique in Washington , DC . Have had a very rewarding 17 years there with many great cases, much pro bono work, and wonderful partners.
If I didn't need to practice law I'd write novels. Probably bad ones.
My favorite NYU memory is the afternoon of finishing the bar exam, lying in the sun in Washington Square Park with friends, utterly exhausted and relieved.

Sandra J. DuBoff ’81 - I am a partner at Phillps Nizer LLP where I have been practicing law for the last ten years. I am a corporate and banking partner - leading the firm's transactional banking practice representing lenders and corporate
debtors. I am married with two daughters and one grandson. If I were not practicing law, I would travel full-time. Fortunately, I am able to spend quite a few weeks each year in Hawaii . My favorite law school
memory is the time I spent with the two women, Lee Shapiro and Margaret Sheehan, who became my best friends - like myself, they were married with children while attending law school. We (and our husbands, who
are also lawyers) still spend time together. Marge and I were unable to attend the 25th reunion in New York City , but we celebrated on Maui .

Ronald A. Eisenberg ’81 - I have been practicing law in estate planning since graduation. I have done some moving around, and have practiced in Minnesota , New York and Florida . In 2005, our family (Wife Gena and Children Aimee 19 and Michael 15) made a major decision to relocate to Florida . We wanted to get away from the harsh Minnesota winters. We are now relocated to Southwest Florida on the Gulf Coast . I am working with the firm of Henderson Franklin Starnes & Holt in their branch office in Bonita Springs . This is a retirement area, so it is a very good place to work if your specialty area is estate planning. Any of my classmates are welcome to drop by when they are in our new area.
My favorite NYU memory is working with the Moot Court program, of which I was the Chairman in 1980-1981. So many wonderful people and good times.

Barry Fleishman ’81 - 4 wonderful, fantastic kids. Joanna at University of Maryland, Adam at Lawrence Academy in Mass., Lindsay a high school freshman, and Dalton in 5th grade. Remarried to my high school prom date (no kidding); life's a wild roller coaster ride. Partner at Dickstein Shapiro and chair of pro bono committee -- we really don't do enough, do we. Miss the Rowen/Simmons parties.
Still want to manage a ballet company, write plays, coach hockey, train and show dogs, go to the Winter Olympics, and play lots of poker.
Favorite NYU Memory? Really can't say -- but it's an unreal memory and has nothing at all to do with law; a great play at second base; and falling asleep during the property final.
My contact information is: fleishmanb@dsmo.com
Cheryl Foung ’81 - Immediately upon graduating, I did a judicial clerkship with The Honorable Robert M. Hill, N.D. Tex. It was one of the best things I ever did. I then moved to San Francisco , worked at Thelen Marrin Johnson & Bridges ('82-84), then moved to Sideman & Bancroft. I worked as an associate there, became a partner, and took a leave of absence in 1992 to become a Special
Assistant to the City Attorney for the City of San Francisco . I was at the City Attorney's office from 1992-1998 and worked primarily for the trial department. Although I loved that job, the people and the work, I left to join Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati as Special Counsel in the securities litigation department. I had gotten married in 1992, moved to Palo Alto where my husband Steven is a doctor at Stanford, and had a child. Commuting became too difficult.
I am still at Wilson Sonsini, enjoy the high level securities practice at the firm, do a fair amount of appellate work, and am happy to say I am part-time. The rest of my life is very busy; I have an 11 year old daughter, 20 year old step-daughter and 23 year old step son. I am active in the PTA and in Stanford community events. My family lives on the beautiful Stanford campus and life there is a bit like Leave It To Beaver, which I consider a good thing. People are incredibly down to earth and busy working moms like me can call each other when we need to abandon our kids temporarily. I love California and hope many of you will look me up when you are in the neighborhood.
My work no. is 650-565-3915
Donald G. Frankel ’81 - I have been working at the Environmental Enforcement Section of the Department of Justice since 1989. I am currently located at the Boston Field Office. I got married in 1992 to Polly Wolf and have two children ages 9 (Hannah) and 11 (Ezra). Having children has been my top adventure.
If I did not need to practice law I'd teach high school physics.
My favorite NYU memory is discovering New York during my first year (after having lived for four years in New Hampshire )

David M. Friedman ’81 - I've been practicing law since graduation, doing bankruptcy and commercial litigation from the very start. In 1994, I joined with a few colleagues to form a firm called Kasowitz, Benson, Torres & Friedman based in New York City , and we've been blessed with great success in our practice. We currently number almost 200 lawyers and the firm has afforded me great personal and professional satisfaction.
The beautiful college student named Tammy Sand who I dated in Law School became my bride three weeks before the bar exam in July 1981. We are looking forward to our 25th anniversary this summer, which we hope to celebrate with our five children, Daniel (21), Jacob (19), Aliza (16), Talia (12) and Katie (4). Our two eldest are college students at Columbia and NYU, respectively. We live on Long Island and have vacation homes in upstate New York and Jerusalem , Israel .
My commitment to a legal career has waxed and waned over the years, but on balance it's been a great day job. I've been privileged to be part of a very exciting entrepreneurial organization where I've made some lasting friendships and had the opportunity to do a lot of interesting things. If Condi Rice called looking for a right-hand man would I be interested? Sure. But short of that, I've been very lucky.
When I think back to law school my overwhelming memory is the fight for a seat in the back row during my first year. I was very impressed with the large number of like-minded students determined not to be called upon at all costs.

Ann Boeker Gibbons ’81 - I am now an information technology consultant in Chevy Chase , Maryland . I spend a lot of my time volunteering as a member of the national board of directors of Autism Speaks, a nonprofit organization dedicated to funding global biomedical research into the causes, prevention, treatments, and cure for autism. This cause chose me; I have two teenage children, one of whom has autism.
In 1998, I founded the Maryland Autism Project to open a school-based intensive behavioral program for children with autism. I am a founding board member and past president of Families for Intensive Autism Treatment of Maryland. I am also the secretary of the board of directors of The Ivymount School in Rockville , Maryland .
Favorite NYU Memory? My lifelong friend Phil Tugendrajch's best final exam grade ever was his essay in Sylvia Law's Family Law class, in which he wrote: "As a single mother of two, I . . . ."
My contact information is: anngibbons@aol.com
Gregory F. Hauser ’81 - After N.Y.U., I was a litigation associate at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison through the end of 1983. After a New Year's Caribbean cruise, I joined Walter, Conston & Schurtman, which some years later became Walter, Conston, Alexander & Green, which merged with Alston & Bird of Atlanta in January 2001. I have been a litigation partner since 1990, specializing in representing foreign companies, chiefly from the German speaking countries (Germany, Switzerland and Austria), in commercial litigation in courts in the U.S., including product liability defense, intellectual property litigation, business contract and tort disputes, etc. I remain a bachelor living on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, footloose and fancy free in NYC, doting by long-distance on twelve nephews and nieces (one brother has eight children) and a couple of godchildren. Between work and vacation, I have visited all but five of the fifty states and, at last count, over two dozen different nations in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Africa (where I climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in 2004). Despite a couple of temporary health challenges (discovery of a pituitary tumor in 2003 and an emergency appendectomy in 2005) my health is excellent, and I run about 20K per week.
If I didn't need to practice law, I'd split my time among genealogical research and writing a family history (I have it traced as far back as about 1600), traveling, and volunteering in New York City .
Favorite NYU memories: Gossiping in the law library, and learning to be a Yankee fan.

Fred S. Hodara ’81 - Within a few years after law school I had two children with my wife Terri, to whom I was already married during law school (indeed, we have been together since high school!) and with whom I will celebrate 29 years of marriage later this year. Our eldest, Ellie, graduated from
Cornell last year and has settled back into our hometown of the last 20 years, Westfield, New Jersey, with her high school boyfriend (definitely something in the genes), just in time for our son Alex to leave home to begin college in the fall.
I have practiced happily at two firms since graduating and am the Chairman of the Financial Restructuring Group at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, resident in our New York office.

Marilyn Henry Howell ’81 - Right after law school I went to the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor where my husband was working on a fellowship in journalism and I was waiting for the results of the bar exam.
We were in Mexico from '82 to '83 and I was a copy editor at the only English speaking newspaper called The News. From '83 to '84, I was working with a law firm, Estrella Abogados, in Mexico City .
From '84 to present I have been a Court Attorney to a Judge in the Family Court System in every county in New York City except for Staten Island . It is an exciting job. I am now with a judge who is only doing child protection proceedings (abuse, neglect and termination of parental rights). It has its ups and downs, but it's good to have an opportunity to make an impact in those areas.
I've also been an Adjunct Professor at the New York City College of Technology. The things that I've taught include environmental law, adoption law and mediation to undergraduate students to give them a flavor for what the different things meant and what it was a part of.
I have also been a volunteer arbitrator for the Second Department for attorney fee disputes in matrimonial proceedings and a volunteer mediator with the Brooklyn Mediation Center which was what I did while in Manhattan , until I moved to Brooklyn , which is where I am now.
I love mediation, and I try to use it when I'm conferencing cases for the Judge I work with.

Timothy S. Jensen ’81 - After graduating in 1981, I worked for eight years at Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts in Manhattan , and then made the switch back to elementary school teaching in 1988. For the past 18 years, I have taught fourth grade at the Packer Collegiate School in Brooklyn Heights , and continue to love the world of 9 and 10-year-olds.
In 1999 I married Susan Braham, a massage therapist and yoga instructor, and we have a five-year-old daughter named Lily who is presently a kindergartener at my school - a wonderful thing, to have all of your colleagues teaching your daughter! Susan, Lily and I live in an old Tiffany warehouse in Cobble Hill which was converted into condos - walking distance from school. I do a lot of tutoring of private students for the SAT in order to make financial ends meet. We love living in New York City but often consider whether we could spend less time earning money and more time enjoying our family in another location.
I made the switch many years ago, but do miss the traveling and public speaking I got to do when back at VLA.
My favorite NYU memories: "Turkey bingo" - renting that loft on lower Broadway for a party after first semester exams, and having Professor Johnston show up to boogie - serving Irish coffee with Jamesons's and real whipped cream in the student/faculty lounge one St. Patrick's Day, and having most of the school sloshed by noon - Sylvia Law's 72 hour take home exam in First Year Torts, and dazedly showing up for a huge group lunch at some bar after we all turned it in - pathetic arguments about how late to close the law school library Saturday night - our graduation in Carnegie Hall - Dean Redlich's laugh - Mock Trial - those cartoons in the Commentator - that pizza place on the corner - rumors ( probably Urban Legends) that some students were "razor blading" out cases and citations in library law reporters to get an edge - SO much reading that I had to have my eyeglass prescriptions changed three times in three years - Professor Collins' syllabus for First Year "Contracts," which was essentially the entire casebook from cover to cover - all the nice people I was surprised to meet at law school!

Arlene S. Kanter ’81 - After graduating from NYU, I had a fellowship at Georgetown 's Institute for Public Representation where my first case ended up in the US Supreme Court (and was argued by our former professor, Burt Neuborne). I then worked at the Mental Health Law Project (now known as the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law), and in 1988, I joined the faculty at Syracuse University College of Law as a professor and Director of Clinical Legal Education. Last year, I stepped down as clinic director to co-direct SU' s new Center on Human Policy, Law, and Disability Studies, a university-wide multi-disciplinary center dedicated to promoting inclusion and equality for people with disabilities, and to direct the COL's Disability Law and Policy Program, which houses the first joint degree program in Law and Disability Studies. My disability-related work has taken me to many countries, including Israel , where I taught at Hebrew University . I also work with Mental Disability Rights International, a Washington , D.C. based not-for-profit organization, which investigates and reports on abuse of people with disabilities in institutions throughout the world. Our recent report on conditions in Turkish mental hospitals may be viewed at www.mdri.org. I am also a member of the American Bar Association Commission on Mental and Physical Disability, and former Associate Dean of the Law Faculty at SU. My first casebook, co-authored with others, Cases and Materials on International Human Rights and Comparative Mental Disability Law (Carolina Academic Press) will be published this year. My husband is a professor at Colgate University , our daughter is a sophomore at Brown University , and our son, who is the song writer and lead singer for a local rock band, is a junior in high school.
I love what I do -- all of it, but most of all I love my wonderful family and friends. It is not a favorite memory, but I do appreciate the terrific education I received at NYU, and the support I received for pursuing a career in public interest law, and later, clinical teaching.

Vincent M. Kiernan ’81 - I am married to Melissa and we have two smart and beautiful daughters, Samantha, age 8 and Nicole, age 7. The absolute best time is when we go on vacation together. I am partner at Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge LLP and mostly work with early stage and closely held businesses as both lawyer and business advisor.
If I weren't practicing law, I would build things. Houses, landscaping, big or small. It wouldn't matter as long as long as I was working and using my hands.

John S. Koppel ’81 - Married law school classmate Rosa Gottlieb in August 1981, after we took the NY bar exam. We have one son, an almost-17-year-old saxophone player named Simon. I have spent my entire career at DOJ, doing civil appellate work, which I still find very stimulating and enjoyable. Rosa is now the Deputy General Counsel of the U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board.

Steven C. Krane ’81 - I have worked at Proskauer Rose in New York since graduation, with the exception of a year off to clerk for Judge Judith S. Kaye of the New York Court of Appeals (1984-85) and another year off to serve as President of the New York State Bar Association (2001-02). My practice was mainly in sports-related litigation until a few years ago, when I began concentrating more on representing lawyers and law firms in professional ethics issues (counseling, disciplinary defense, etc.). I have also been involved in disaster planning and recovery for lawyers in New York and, more recently, other locations (those affected by Katrina/Rita/Wilma). I have been married to Faith (whom I met at Proskauer) since 1983, and have two children, Liz (16) and Cam (12). We live in Pound Ridge, in northern Westchester County .
I would be either a historian (writing biographies of 20th century military and political figures -- I have two in the works), or a meteorologist (studying severe thunderstorms, which I chase as a hobby), or both. When not doing either of those, I would follow my beloved Red Sox around the country (I still remember watching Bucky F. Dent's home run on October 2, 1978 while in the TV room at Hayden Hall).
Favorite NYU Memory? Not Bucky Dent's home run. I prefer the day after the 1980 presidential election, when I and the other five openly Republican members of our class were able to gloat.

Stuart L. Kricun ’81 - Since NYU, I've primarily been practicing entertainment law, having worked for Universal Studios, MGM, Carolco Pictures, Playboy Entertainment Group and now Disney Channel. The move to Disney Channel dovetails with the birth of my daughter, Arianna, who was born on July 4th. I got married in 2004 to my wife Cipora, who is a social worker (a first marriage for both of us). Among other things that I have done over the past 25 years, I've been president of the Columbia University Alumni Association of Southern California and also president of Creative Arts Temple , one of the first synagogues catering to the entertainment industry.
If I weren't practicing law, I'd love to be writing scripts for film and television. It'd be nice to be able to create something that leaves a lasting impression, even if it's something as ephemeral as a movie or television program.
It sounds a little silly, but my favorite NYU memory took place our 2nd year. A few of us formed a team to play in the intramural law school football league and, against enormous odds, we were successful in defeating the favored team from the Graduate Tax program. It just goes to show you what a little bit of teamwork can do.

Robert W. Laffin ’81 - Worked on Wall Street until 1985. Moved to Downeast Maine (family home) after that and have practiced law in one way or another ever since. Currently in small law firm in Ellsworth, near Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park. Make little money; have great life, full of excellent people. Enjoy sailing, camping, hiking -- the outdoor life you can have in Maine . Love small town living. Very active in community groups, esp. 12-Step programs for past 18 years. Lost partner to AIDS in 1988. Alone until recently, now partnered and stepdad to two teenagers. Breed rare Italian sheepdogs (Bergamasco).

Brian F. Lanter ’81 - After graduating from NYU, I came back to my native state of New Mexico (yes, it was one of the 50 even then) to practice law with a large (by New Mexico standards) commercial firm in Albuquerque . After 10 years of big-firm practice, mainly corporate and securities law, I decided to follow my avocation of studying classical languages. So I quit the big firm, went to UNM and got a bachelor's degree in classics. Since then I have been practicing securities law on my own and I became an EDGAR filing agent,
which pays the bills while I work on a master's degree in Comparative Literature in classics and teach Latin and Greek at the university. Oh, and
I took three years of Japanese as well, plus Old English, Old Norse and a little Sanskrit. Did I
mention that I like languages? I have lived in the same small house near the university since coming to Albuquerque , which I have shared with my partner Anthony for over seven years now. I've sung with the New Mexico Gay Men's Chorus since 1981, so you can tell I'm a guy
who puts down roots.
If I didn't have to practice law to make a living, I would be studying and teaching classical languages -- full time, that is.
My favorite memory of NYU is the Lesbian and Gay Law Student organization, which provided a set of great friends and great activities, and where I lost my virginity (I just mean that it was on a LGLS field trip that I first saw the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Eight Street Playhouse. Although there was that night in Connecticut . . . )

Parkin Lee ’81 - Hey, a lot has happened in 25 yrs!
Two kids: Lauren is 23 and working as a legal assistant with Fred Hodara, Justin is in his fourth year of college at SUNY Stony Brook studying mechanical engineering. Still living in Brooklyn, working in Manhattan as an attorney for New York Life Investment Management, responsible for all investment activities other than mutual funds and real estate. I enjoy, in no particular order, food, wine, running (ran the Paris Marathon three years ago and the New York Marathon last year), biking and skiing (we have a ski house in Vermont).
I'm a Vice President of the NYU Law Alumni Board and am actively engaged in various Asian Pacific American bar activities.
If I did not have to practice law, I'd be raising money to fund scholarships and fellowships for law students who are committed to community or public service.
Favorite NYU Memory - Well, I met my wife when I was an NYU undergrad, but I think you're more interested in Law School . Japanese food at Cotan, on W 3rd St - it's our one law school hangout that we still keep on going back to, although it changed ownership and its name recently.

Amy (Lorber) Shamash ’81 - Following graduation and a few years at a large NYC law firm, I spent a year traveling around the world, which was truly the experience of a lifetime (the world seemed a safer place back in 1984 than it is now).
After moving to Los Angeles , I met and married Mark Shamash. In addition to raising our two teenagers (which is by far the most challenging job I've ever had), I work part time for Vulcan Materials Company, a national construction aggregate company, and devote what little spare time I have to playing tennis and being an officer andactive Board member at our synagogue.

Delsia G. Marshall ’81 - I have enjoyed life since NYU. I have litigated cases in all New York Courts with special emphasis on tort litigation in Supreme Court. I enjoyed extensive travel to the Caribbean and after due deliberation have decided Jamaica is my favorite island for vacations.
If I did not need to practice law I would study professional baking.
My favorite NYU memories are of Moot Court and studying at Hayden Hall on New Years Eve.

David L. McColgin ’81 - After law school I worked for 3 years in The Legal Aid Society, Criminal Appeals Bureau, and then I came to Philadelphia where I have remained ever since, working as a public defender with the Philadelphia Defender Association. After four years doing trial work in the county court system, I switched to the federal office. I have been the chief of the appeals unit in the federal office for the past 8 years. I feel like this job is the perfect fit for me -- I get to spend most of my time doing federal criminal appellate work, an area I find very exciting, especially given the turmoil over federal sentencing, and our appeals unit is small enough that I don't have to spend too much time on management or supervision. Aside from appeals, I am also working with a team of attorneys from our office representing two detainees being held in Guantanamo , Cuba .
My life partner, Eloy (who happens to be from Cuba ) and I have been together for about 22 years. He is a teacher, and spent two years (2001-03) in the Peace Corps in Nepal , teaching English. It was very difficult being separated from him for so long, but I did go to visit him three times, and we did some spectacular trekking in the Himalayas . My health has been great, although I have been living with HIV for about 25 years. I feel very fortunate that I have had the love and caring of Eloy, my family and my friends, to help keep me healthy. Being HIV positive motivated me to stop being a workaholic, and to focus on taking good care of myself, physically, mentally and spiritually. I have a daily practice of yoga, meditation and breathing exercises that, together with the latest meds, have been keeping me in good health and keeping the virus undetectable. In my spare time I have been teaching meditation and breathing techniques through the Art of Living Foundation, and I just returned from 3 weeks of meditating and travelling in India . I am still trying to readjust to being back at work, and I think part of me is still sitting by the Ganges meditating.
My favorite memory from law school is of when, as part of the Criminal Law Clinic, I argued a mens rea issue in the Second Circuit, where one very old judge kept asking me, "Men's what?" and Chet Mirsky kept tugging on my jacket to tell me what to say.

Joseph A. McIntosh ’81 - I have been practicing law in Seattle since I left NYU and the clerkship at the Tax Court. My practice is a combination of business, tax, and ERISA. Meg and I are doing well. Our three kids are out of high school. Jo Jo is in his second year at Willamette Law School . John and Molly are at WSU. We took the kids on an east coast vacation in 1998 and visited NYU.

Jesse Milan ’81 - I have been very involved in HIV/AIDS and public health work. I am Vice President for Global Health Convergence of the Constella Group, a $150 million international health consulting firm providing program development services to domestic, international and commercial health entities. Our primary clients include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Agency for International Development. I have been engaged several times by the U.S. State Department and the CDC to conduct motivational speaking tours on HIV/AIDS to eight African countries on HIV/AIDS, and I have delivered many national and international keynote addresses, sermons and presentations on the topic (including live in primetime at the 2000 Democratic National Convention). In 2002, I was appointed by U.S. Department of Health and Human Service Secretary Tommy Thompson as co-chair of the federal CDC and HRSA Advisory Committee on HIV Prevention, Treatment and Care, which advises the federal government on it $3 billion effort on HIV/AIDS. I previously served as AIDS Director for the City of Philadelphia and as chief of staff for six years to the President of Temple
University. I stopped actively practicing law in 1989, after serving as a Deputy City Solicitor for the City of Philadelphia and Associate Counsel for Temple University .
If I had not practiced law, I would have gone in to public service through another route. However, I might have made a try at a professional career as a performer. Just this
past weekend (March 31-April 1. 2006) I completed a run as the lead (Harold Hill) in The Music Man in a community theater in Baltimore . I choreographed the show, just like I did for the annual law revue musical 25 years ago.
Without a doubt, my favorite NYU memories are of working on the annual law revue musical with Steve and Linda Pittleman and the amazingly talented law school community. My second favorite memories include sneaking into Broadway shows and cooking with my roommate Michael Gottlieb for our friends in Hayden Hall.

Darrell J. Minott ’81 - Evon and I have been married since 1981. We have two children: Tamara (19) and Clayton (13). Tamara attends Loyola College . Clayton attends Saint Edmond's Academy.
For eight years, I served as a Cabinet Secretary for The Honorable Thomas R. Carper, governor of Delaware : Secretary of Labor (1992-1997) and Director of the Delaware Economic Development Office (1998-2000).
Currently, I spend a lot of time in Washington , D.C. as part of Bank of America's Federal Government Relations team. After my public service career, I joined MBNA, the credit card company. MBNA was recently acquired by Bank of America.
The biggest challenge that I faced in my career was convincing the merged pharmaceutical company of Astra-Zeneca to locate in Delaware . Thousands of jobs and millions of tax revenues were at stake. Fortunately, we were successful.
My favorite NYU memories involve the many crazy sessions involving Keith Alexander, Zenola Harper, and Judy Batty.

Jeffrey A. Moerdler ’81 - I have been married to Susan for 25 years and we have three great kids. Scott is a sophomore at Brandeis majoring in fine art, with a minor in theatre and pre-med. Our twins, Jonathan and Eric, are sophomores at Ramaz High School and are captains respectively of the junior varsity basketball and floor hockey teams. I joined the New York office of Boston based Mintz Levin in November 2000, nine months after the office opened, to head its New York real estate and communications practices and I
brought my entire group with me from my old firm, the New York office of Philadelphia based Wolf Block.
I do not see myself retiring but I might work at a bit less at the office and spend more time on several pro-bono activities that I now work on, the Riverdale YM-YWHA and the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty. I would also consider an extended trip to Israel to improve my minimal Hebrew and enjoy Israel with my family.

KEVIN J. Moore ’81 - I am a partner in the Land Use and Redevelopment Group of Sills Cumm is Epstein Gross P.C. in Newark , NJ . I practice redevelopment and land use law. This year I was named a New Jersey Super Lawyer by Law and Politics and was named to the Best Lawyers in America by Woodward/White, Inc. I am married to Mary Fitzpatrick Moore. We have been married since 1985. We have one son, Jack, a fifth grader, who will be 11 on April 8, which is why I won't be at the reunion.
If I did not have to practice law, sadly enough, I think I would teach and write about redevelopment law and land planning.

F. Thomas Muller ’81 - After graduating I started at Weil Gotshal as a real estate lawyer. After three years there, my wife, Carol Eliel, finished her Ph.D. in Art History and got a great offer from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, so we left NYC, the center of the universe, for a rather different place. I joined O'Melveny & Myers as a real estate lawyer and was so impressed by both the people and the practice that I became the firm's hiring partner. I am still practicing real estate at O'Melveny, with a very varied practice, with deals ranging from California to Costa Rica to Cambodia .
My greatest joy in life is being a father to two teenaged sons, the older about to head back east for college. We have traveled fairly widely, enjoyed the outdoors in California , and all in all have had a very fortunate and happy life.
I hate to admit it, but I actually do enjoy practicing law. When I retire, I'll probably teach, as teaching younger lawyers how to practice law is the most rewarding part of what I do now.
I have a lot of good NYU memories, but the ones that come back most often--if somewhat
fuzzily--are at McSorley's on Friday afternoons with Laura Johnson, Billy Tennis, Jeff Rosen, Scott Bell, Jeff Davis and a varying cast of others. Those great friendships made law school not just bearable, but a lot of fun.

David E. Nachman ’81 - My years since law school have been very good to me -- better, I'm sure, than I deserve. Professionally, I learned my craft at the Paul, Weiss firm, where I worked on some of the great cases of the 80's, and then had a wonderful 13-year run, together with classmate Randy Sellier, at the NY litigation boutique formerly known as Stein (later Solomon), Zauderer, Ellenhorn, Frischer & Sharp. My sideline throughout these years, up to the present moment, has been international human rights work, through which I've had the opportunity to witness incredible human dignity and courage in the face of equally incredible human cruelty and oppression.
For the past nearly three years, I've practiced with what now is one of the world's largest firms, DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary; it was my wife Amy Schulman, one of the firm's leading stars, who recruited me to join.
She is a persuasive, compelling woman, Amy, and twenty of my of my twenty-five years since law school have been spent by her side (when she's not on the road, anyway). We have three boys together -- Ezra (16), Gideon (12) and Rafael (6) -- and our home in Brooklyn is rarely
a dull place. An amateur interest in national politics, a substantial commitment to my local synagogue, lots of travel and a love of good wine and conversation round out a fortunate life.
If I weren't practicing law, I'd probably do what I already do -- just more of it: more time on national politics, international human rights work, and community service, more time at the beach and in exotic locales, and perhaps most of all, more time with the friends for whom there's never quite enough time.
I have fond memories of my days at NYU. I am, or at least was, competitive enough to actually enjoy (most) of our first-year classes, and the teachers and classmates from whom I learned a lot still stand out clearly in my mind. Truth be
told, though, perhaps the best part of those days were the sybaritic experiences that the West Village offered to a young man with a decent studio and few responsibilities. All that, combined with the intellectual stimulus the Law School provided, came pretty close to heaven.

Robert Booth Opatrny ’81 - Since NYU, I worked at two law firms, then set out on my own. During that time, I survived several outdoor adventures with Bob Rowen, who is also still alive and doing well last time I saw him.
I am a solo practioner in New York City , working in the music business. Along the way, I have been blessed with my wife, Susan Sutherland, NYU Law Class of '82, and my son Austin, 13, and daughter Julia, 8.
Most of my professional time is spent as General Counsel and part owner of Pump Audio, a music licensing firm in Tivoli , New York that provides independent music for use in television, film, advertising, Internet and wireless applications. Check us out: www.pumpaudio.com We have been very fortunate in our growth, and chances are you hear our music during your day without knowing it. It has been a great deal of fun to take an idea involving music, implement it, and create opportunities for a lot of artists.
I am active as a member of the Board of Directors of the Jazz Foundation of America, a not-for-profit organization that assists senior jazz musicians with medical, housing and other life emergencies.
To the extent possible I enjoy my free time at our ge taway up Columbia County , New York , and when I am really lucky I head to our fishing camp on the Baskatong Reservoir in Northern Quebec .
Walleye season opens May 20. I'll be there.

PITTLEMAN, Steven H.
After practicing entertainment law at Proskauer Rose LLP and then as Counsel to United Artists, I started my own attorney search firm, Pittleman & Associates, Inc.
We have placed attorneys around the world at corporations like Goldman Sachs, MTV, General Electric, etc. and at law firms ranging from Wachtell Lipton and Skadden Arps to small, specialized boutiques. I married my law school classmate, Linda Perez, who is now also my partner in the business and we have 3 children, Julian, Gabriel and Jenna who are 18, 15 and 12, respectively. Raising them has been the joy of our lives and they seem to be having a pretty decent time, too.
If I didn't have to worry about earning an income, I would probably be writing screenplays when I could get off my beach chair.
My favorite NYU memory is of directing the Law Revues. Although I had worked in the professional theater before attending law school, I was amazed by the incredible talent and sheer joy of working with people like Linda, Jesse Milan, Amy Lorber, Wendy Waller, Linda Brothers, Andy Linder, Marc Platt, Gail Laster, Claudia Flynn, Janice Kelly, etc .

Jeffrey B. Rosen ’81 - Where I disappeared to third year was Yale Law School , on account of true love, as my bride-to-be was in medical school there. The deal was I would spend one year in New Haven and she would spend the rest of her life in New York , which seemed fair to me, if not to her -- and has
in any case worked out well for our two boys, who got to grow up in Manhattan . Daphne has spent her entire professional career at Columbia , where she is a professor of pediatric cardiology, while I have been at three law firms -- Webster & Sheffield, Hawkins, Delafield & Wood and now Arent Fox. I specialize in real estate development and project finance. Career highlights have included representing the Government of Poland in connection with various toll road concessions (37 trips to Warsaw over a period of seven years); the State of Connecticut in successive efforts to get the New England Patriots to move to Hartford; and the US Postal Service in various mixed-use development projects, including the tower over the Grand Central post office and the pending Farley/Moynihan Station project. My sons are 18 and 15. Bobby is a left-handed pitcher, but alas not my meal ticket; he insists on going to college. Michael, on the other hand, does seem on track to turn pro, but as a ballet dancer; he spends nine hours per week at the School of
American Ballet, and will have to leave Fieldston next year as his training is slated to become even more intense.
If I did not need to practice law I'd have been a musician, which is why I haven't discouraged Michael from pursuing his ambitions as a dancer, notwithstanding the co-op fees.

my wife, Fran. Our older son, Arthur (born one week before we started law school), is now a 2L at Harvard. Our younger son, Seth, is graduating from Wesleyan this year.
If I did not need to practice law, I would open a restaurant in the village of Oia on Santorini. I can't cook, but I'd sit out front and buy drinks for the guests.

Lorna G. Schofield ’81 - Work - I spent 3 years at Cleary Gottlieb, then 4 years as a prosecutor in Rudy Giuliani's office. Since then I have been at Debevoise in New York , where I am a litigation partner. The most fun and satisfying representation I have had was for Rosie O'Donnell in her lawsuit and trial with the former publisher of her magazine. Currently I am doing mostly white collar work.
Family - Married, divorced, one child (Sarah) -- not in that order. Sarah is a freshman in college and I live with my cat.
Adventures and travels - Horsebacking riding in Belize last spring. Undoubtedly more in the last 25 years, but I'm getting so old I don't remember.
There's a book with a great title called, "I Could Do Anything I Want, If Only I Knew What It Was"

The work/rest-of-life balance is pretty good. European trips with the entire family, weekend visits to Lehigh to see Allie's college tennis matches, sharing all sports and watching 24 with Stevie, and long walks with Marsha and Charlie make life fun.

Michael A. Schwartz ’81 - After NYU, I clerked for Judge Vincent L. Broderick of the Southern District of New York; worked in the Appeals Bureau of the Manhattan D.A.'s Office for over seven years; served as trial attorney in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice; practiced law on my own for three years; worked in the Civil Rights Bureau of the New York State Attorney General's Office; got my LL.M degree from Columbia Law; taught for four years at the Rochester Institute of Technology; and am now assistant professor of law at Syracuse University's College of Law where I direct the law school's disability rights law clinic. I am also defending my Ph.D. in Education with a focus on Disability Studies dissertation on April 4th and expect to graduate with a doctorate in May.
I married Patricia Moloney in 1991 and we have a seven-year-old daughter, Brianna Mai.
I have my private pilot's license and am a certified scuba diver. I'm also taking up downhill skiing.
Life's good.

Jay B. Shanker ’81 - "Survivor" of 25 year entertainment law practice: '81 to '05 in Los Angeles as associate then partner with several boutique law firms, in house @ film studio and domestic/international production companies, and 10 years in solo practice.
August '05 moved practice (and family) to my native Oklahoma City to join the state's largest law firm, where I continue to represent my US and international clients in a variety of creative, media, IP and entrepreneurial pursuits, teach law school, edit a horn book on entertainment law and business, and otherwise am (re)experiencing the joys of a simpler, less hurried life, friendly people, good barbecue and country music. Married 15 years to Sara Jane Rose -- a television director (network one-hour cop and action shows) pre-kids, and now a black belt martial arts devotee/instructor. Two
elementary school-aged daughters, Jorja and Rachel, who with their mother insure every day is an adventure!
In addition to a stimulating career amongst creative industry clients (individual artists to public companies), have enjoyed occasional stints on non-profit boards contributing to the arts, media & policy, third world grass-roots economic development, and (currently) as vice-chair of the Oklahoma Creativity Project, networking the state's innovation/creative resources in the service of economic/cultural growth for Oklahoma as the state enters its second century (2007). What would I do if I didn't have to do the stuff I'm doing? More of the same, I'm delighted to say, but I'd indeed love more time for off the beaten path travel abroad (to the several handfuls of places I still haven't visited), putting a closet full of old rock & roll musical gear to better use, reading for pleasure rather than for clients, and tilting Oklahoma from "red" back to "blue".
Law school memories? Washington Square at dawn after overnight snow falls, straggling out of the library at midnight for dinners in Chinatown, the vibrant intoxication of the Village and the city beyond on when work was done (too rarely, unfortunately), the knowledge that world class espresso and cannoli could be had nearly 24/7, the newsstand @ Sixth and 8th the night John Lennon died, first sightings of Keith Haring's nascent scribbling on the walls of the nearby
subway station, and the hope/promise that our lives/careers might change the world (or at least our small pieces of it). And, oh yeah, those who welcomed me with their friendship on our arrival in '78 and who've made the effort to stay in touch (or with whom I've crossed professional paths) in the years since.
Greetings to all from the heartland. Congratulations on the 25 years behind us, and heartfelt best wishes to you and your families for the rewards (of every kind) awaiting us in the next 25!

Aleena Rieger Shapiro ’81 - I worked at Willkie Farr and Gallagher, then Patterson Belknap, obtained an LLM in tax at NYU in 1985, and in 1989 I started the firm that became Shapiro and Wender, LLC. My husband is also a lawyer and both of our daughters became lawyers; they are now married and have two children each, so I'm a grandmother of 4. I squeeze travel in between work, taking about 4 or 5 trips per year to different parts of the globe.
In the past few years, I've written the memoirs of my early childhood and have started a novel. I'd love to have more time to write, hang out in exotic locales, hike and bike, and play backgammon.
I was a mother of two, commuting to NYU from the suburbs, and just being in a student milieu was memorable.

Holly Stein Sollod ’81 - Since NYU I worked as a lawyer in NYC for 3 years at Townley and Updike (now defunct) and and 2 years the American Stock Exchange in the Arbitration and Hearings Department. Then I moved to Denver Colorado in 1986 to marry and joined Holland & Hart LLP. We have offices through out the Rocky Mountain Region from Utah to New Mexico . I have specialized in Securities Litigation and Arbitration for the past 25 years. I made partner in 1990 while on maternity leave with our daughter Michelle. She is now 17 and looking at colleges on the East coast. My husband Hershey is a psychiatrist in private practice. Hershey has two married daughters (who where 5 and 8 when we got married).
I adore Colorado and can't think of anywhere else I'd rather live. We love the mountains and lived in Evergreen for about 14 years. We moved down to Denver 6 years ago to reduce the commute to work and school. It only takes us 15 minutes to get home from work. We love to ski but hate the traffic on I-70. We travel frequently and New York is one of our favorite places to visit.
If I were independently wealthy, and didn't have to practice law, I'd be a photographer. It's always been my passion. Sometimes I think I'd like to be 17 again looking forward to college but then I feel so lucky to be celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary and my 50th birthday this year in such a beautiful place.

Michael S. Spearman ’81 - When I left NYU I spent the first two years in DC as an E. Barrett Prettyman Fellow working towards a master's degree in criminal trial advocacy. In 1983 I moved to Seattle , WA where I have lived every since. For the next 10 years I practiced primarily as a public defender in state and federal court but I also spent a few years in private practice with a small firm. In 1993 I was appointed to the King County Superior Court bench of which I am still a member. I have been married for the last 15 years and have two children ages 15 and 11. Biggest non-law adventure: a week dog-sledding in Alaska . Biggest law adventure: Campaigning (unsuccessfully) for the state supreme court.
If I did not have to practice law, I'd find a way to grow tomatoes year round; shoot and edit short videos; find a way to get lawyers for pro se civil litigants.
My favorite NYU memories: Seeing the Twin Towers everyday; this Cuban-Chinese restaurant on 14th St.; being able to go from the law library to Washington Square Park.

STEINBACH, Harold I.
After law school I spent 2 years at Flemming Zulack and Williamson (NYC). I then spent 18 years at Kleinberg Kaplan Wolff & Cohen in NYC (specializing in corporate and real estate); I was a partner there from 1990- 2000. In 2000-01 I was a partner at Parker Duryee Rosoff and Haft in NYC. In 2002, I started my own firm, Steinbach & Associates, P.C. We have offices in Hackensack , NJ and in NYC. We do corporate, real estate and trusts and estates work. I am much happier having my own small shop.
Shortly after law school I married Beryl Joy Schwartz, who I began dating the end of our first year. Beryl attended Cardozo Law School . She practiced corporate law until 8 years ago when she became a high school English teacher in Montclair , NJ . We have three great kids - 2 daughters (one in college and one in high school) and a son finishing middle school. We've lived in the same home in Teaneck , NJ for 20 years.
My post 40 mid life crises has included the mandatory convertible, the guys' vacations (e.g., rafting down the Grand Canyon), performing stand up comedy, getting a screenwriting certificate from NYU, 3 years of tae kwon do, 6 years of managing little league, starting some business ventures, starting my own law firm, trying to become a better father and husband and a partridge in a pear tree.
My favorite NYU memory was the big party we had the night after our final exams first year. It was such a tremendous relief to be done with exams and to know we had our toughest year behind us. Law school is not nearly as much "fun" as college, but I always felt that we had a very supportive, non- cut throat class that made the experience of law school quite nice.

James Edwin Tierney ’81 - After graduation, I worked for 2 years in NYC at Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle, doing general corporate work. However, I had caught
the "tax bug" in my third year at NYU and went back to the LL.M. Tax Program full-time in 1983, graduating in 1984. I then clerked on the U.S. Tax Court in Washington , D.C. for the Honorable William M. Fay until 1986. I remained in D.C. in private practice with Steptoe & Johnson until 1988, when I accepted an offer to teach full-time at the University of Toledo College of Law in Toledo , OH , where I now live. I was promoted to Professor of Law in 1994. Although I grew up on the East Coast and spent a lot of time there (in N.J. and N.Y.), I guess I am pretty much of a midwesterner now. I rather enjoy the more relaxed pace of life here. I have had the opportunity during my teaching career to be a visitor at the University of San Francisco (for one academic year and four summers since then) and at Wayne State University in Detroit . I have also been fortunate enough to have been invited to teach aspects of U.S. law in Poznan , Poland (1994) and very recently in Szeged , Hungary (2006), each time for about a week. In 2005, I received one of three annual university-wide "Outstanding Teacher Awards" from the University of Toledo . I also was appointed as Interim Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and am still getting used to the transition from being a faculty member to being a faculty member/administrator. My teaching areas are currently Federal taxation (individual, corporate and partnership) and Contracts. I've taught one or two Fed tax courses every year since 1988, and have taught Contracts for over twelve years now. I especially enjoy teaching first-year students.
As my reply above suggests, I don't actively practice law. I'm not sure I would rather be doing anything else besides teaching and being in academia. However, I did go back to school part-time at the University of Toledo to earn a second bachelor's degree, this time in music. I finished the degree in 1999. I suppose that if I had the talent, I would like to be a choral director, but I see how many talented musical folks are out there, and I'm not nearly on that level. It's fun to imagine, however, because I really enjoy choral music, at least singing it if I can't conduct it.
I have many fond memories of NYU, particularly of the classmates I met there. I won't mention names, for fear of leaving someone out, but I think that the friends I made
there know who they are, even if I haven't been the best at keeping in touch with them. I had two great J.D. level tax courses with Professor Billman, which sparked my interest in studying and teaching tax law. One of my fondest first-year memories is of Contracts class, with lots of great students and taught by Professor Jeff Davis, who was a visiting professor and who now teaches at the University of Florida . The first case in our Contracts book was Hamer v. Sidway. I still have the casebook we used, and every time I teach that case to my own Contracts students using their own casebooks, I bring my old casebook down to the classroom and show them that they are following in a grand tradition of case law study.

E. Sloan White ’81 - After Sloan White and Chris Arnold graduated from law school, they fell in love, got married and moved to San Francisco . Ever since then, Chris has practiced real estate law and Sloan has worked in-house at a shipping company. The thing they miss most about New York City is cold sesame noodles. You can contact them at sloanandchris@comcast.net.
Lisa A. Yacomelli ’81 - I practiced for about five years in various locations...big firms, little firms, firms with lots of money and firms sinking under the waters...and then decided to switch tacks altogether. I owned and ran a business for a long while. Right now, I'm pursuing a Master's in English and teaching at a small private prep school in Princeton .
My son, AJ, is about to be launched into college next year. Between that fact and my quickly approaching 50th birthday, I have decided to stay at home with my head under the covers!
