On October 1, 2013, Paul S. Berger ’57 received the Judge Edward Weinfeld Award at the annual Weinfeld Gala. Established in memory of honored alumnus Edward Weinfeld ’21, the Judge Edward Weinfeld Award recognizes the professional distinction of alumni who graduated from the Law School 50 years ago or more.
Mr. Berger is a retired senior partner at Arnold & Porter in Washington, DC and has represented a wide variety of foreign and domestic governments, corporations, partnerships, and other business entities, labor organizations, and tax-exempt organizations, including trade associations. Widely experienced in the planning of transactions, financing, adversary proceedings, and legislative and regulatory matters, Mr. Berger also practices in the areas of international finance, government relations, privatization, pension and welfare reform legislation, estate planning, and estate administration.
Mr. Berger has been a frequent contributor to legal periodicals, including The Tax Lawyer, the Journal of Taxation, numerous law reviews, and Practicing Law Institute publications. In addition to serving as Chairman Emeritus for the Board of Governors at Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School, he serves on the board of directors for the Shalom Hartman Institute of North America as well as the Aleph Society, and is a member of both the District of Columbia Bar Association and the American Bar Association. Mr. Berger is also a life trustee of New York University School of Law. As a frequent host of alumni gatherings in the Washington, DC area, he has maintained vital connections to our friends and alumni in one of our most important regions. His generous support and dedication to the Law School have made him an invaluable partner in ensuring our success.
