J.D./M.A., Ph.D. in Law and Society
New York University School of Law's Institute for Law and Society is a center for faculty, graduate students and law students studying law and legal institutions from a transdisciplinary perspective. Scholars at the Institute explore a broad range of law-related issues both domestically and globally. Particular focus is geared towards:
- Law and politics
- Legal anthropology
- Economic analyses of law
- Sociology of law
- Criminology
- Psychology and law
- Legal history
The Law and Society Program is designed for students who are pursuing academic careers in the social sciences and/or law, seeking to work in public policy and policy analysis, or seeking to do applied research on law-related issues.
Students begin with a year of coursework at the Institute for Law and Society, and then complete the first-year curriculum at the Law School. Registration for subsequent semesters takes place in consultation with a faculty advisor.
Those interested in a dual degree must apply to and be accepted by both the Law School and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, either simultaneously or during the first year of study.
