Reunions have been held every five years for past and present fellows. The first reunion was a modest dinner held at the grand (but now lost) Luchow’s Restaurant on East Fourteenth Street. The most recent reunions have featured panels of former Hays Fellows discussing controversial issues and distinguished guest speakers. Rep. Barney Frank and National Public Radio correspondent Nina Totenberg were the speakers at the 30th anniversary reunion, Justice Harry Blackmun spoke at the 35th, Gloria Steinem and Professor David Cole were the featured guests at the 40th anniversary event, and ACLU executive director Anthony Romero and Nation columnist Katha Pollitt spoke at the 45th reunion in May 2003.
