ExamSoft for Final Examinations

What is ExamSoft software and what are its benefits?
The ExamSoft program, SofTest, is a simplified word processor designed to be familiar to users of WordPerfect or Microsoft Word, with options for cutting and pasting within your exam document, font style adjustment (bold, italics and underline), undoing your last command, and spell checking.

SofTest has a considerable number of safety features to ensure that answers typed into SofTest cannot be lost. They include:

  • An AutoSave feature that automatically saves two separate encrypted copies of the exam answer file on a rotating basis every sixty seconds during the exam. An encrypted backup copy of the entire exam is retained on the computer's hard drive should a second copy be needed.
  • If your computer freezes during the exam, the portion of the exam that was completed prior to the freeze will be recoverable for grading purposes.
  • Because the internet is used as a vehicle to download and upload the examination if it is a secure exam, you will not be connected to the internet through the course of the exam, you do not have to be concerned about losing your connection, and your work, as you type your exam.
  • The completed and uploaded examination will be retrieved by staff through the internet and printed and delivered to the Faculty. Your responsibility is to ensure that you exam file was uploaded successfully.

What do I need to know to use SofTest for exams?
Make sure you complete the following before each examination period begins:

  • Make sure your laptop is configured for wireless connectivity.  For more information, click here.
  • Know how to access your Exam Taker profile on the Examsoft website, at http://www.examsoft.com/nyulaw. Your student ID is your NYU NetID, and your password is the last six digits of your University ID number.
  • Obtain your Law School four-digit exam number for the semester, from Albert (access Albert through NYUHome). Please note that each semester you are assigned a different 4-digit exam number!
  • Understand in-class exams. Download exam file to your laptop 48 hours before exam, and determine whether exam is secure or non-secure, closed book or open book, and what you are allowed to bring to the exam room.  You will be sent a reminder to download your exam file by email 48 hours prior to your exam.
