Computing

Please take a moment to review the energy saving options below:

Hibernate Mode

When a computer is put in "hibernate" mode, it will  make a copy of what is in its memory and save it to the hard drive. A copy of this information will quickly be restored (files, emails, windows ect. will all be open just as they were when the computer went into hibernation) when you return to work on the computer. A computer in Hibernate Mode consumes approximately 1.5 watts. It is recommended, as a precaution, that all important documents be saved prior to leaving your office.

Setting Your Computer for Hibernate Mode (Windows)

Step 1: Open the Start menu  and click Settings > Control Panel > Power Options

If you cannot find it, try looking under Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance.

Select the Hibernate tab and check the Enable hibernation box.

Step 2: Go back to the Power Schemes tab and adjust the settings as noted below:

Turn off monitor after 30 minutes and Hibernate after 2 hours.

If you are gone for more than two hours, the monitor will turn off after 30 minutes (just move the mouse or press any key on your keyboard and it will again become active) and the computer will put itself into a deep energy saving mode after 2 hours have elapsed.  When you return to your computer, press the power button to return your computer to its active state.

A computer in standby mode or sleep mode will wake up when the user moves the muose or taps the space bar.  A computer in Standby Mode consumes approximately 2 watts. It is recommended, as a precaution, that all important documents be saved prior to leaving your office.
