NYU Law's launch grant program

Since 1993, the Law School has provided some graduates with short-term launch grants for pursuit of public service employment. Typically three to six months in duration, these grants have in nearly all cases led to permanent legal employment, while also furthering NYU Law’s longstanding commitment to public service. The launch grants are in addition to named fellowships that support work with public service organizations. We also guarantee funding for all first- and second-year students who work in approved summer public service internships. This summer that funding encompasses 438 students working in the U.S. and 30 other countries.

The Class of 2011 faced one of the worst legal job markets in recent memory, a result of lingering fallout from the global financial crisis that began in late 2008. For Class of 2011 graduates, we instituted one-year launch grants, and 45 individuals received this funding, which includes a $2,000 per month stipend.Graduates participating in the launch grant program may request up to 24 months of deferment time from NYU Law's Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP), thereby preserving their 120 months of potential LRAP eligibility. Graduates are ineligible to receive LRAP benefits while on deferment.

A summary of information about launch grants for the classes of 2008-2011 is available in a table titled “NYU Law Funded Launch Grant Positions” on our employment statistics page. As the data indicate, 60 of the 66 funded graduates from the classes of 2008-2010 whose job status is known to us obtained permanent legal employment with their initial employer or with another organization.

Launch grant recipients perform full-time legal work, acquiring valuable training and developing a strong professional network. This means that, even in the toughest of job markets, NYU Law graduates are assured an extended period of paid employment that, as noted, almost always leads to continued work in the field of law. We are happy to report that we have seen a significantly improved employment picture for the Class of 2012.
