Global Opportunities for Students
International Immersion Program
The Law School is committed to offering students opportunities to develop a sophisticated appreciation of how U.S. law interacts with—and is informed by—the legal systems of other nations and the international community. The International Immersion Program for J.D.s provides a framework for organizing the Law School’s curricular and co-curricular activities aimed at preparing students to work in a global setting.
The principal components of the Program are:
- language instruction;
- summer internships with international organizations and foreign law firms or NGOs;
- specialized courses in comparative, foreign, and transnational law; and
- a study abroad program for the Spring semester of the third year.
Language Instruction
NYU offers students interested in improving or developing foreign language skills a variety of alternative forms of language instruction, ranging from courses, software, language coaching, and language tables.
Summer Internships
More than 60 NYU Law students intern abroad every summer in approximately 30 countries. Most of these receive support through the Public Interest Law Center (PILC) Summer Funding Program, which guarantees funding for all first- and second-year students who want to work in public interest and government positions in the US or abroad. The Office of Career Services also helps students secure summer private sector opportunities abroad.
PILC’s intern report database has a wealth of information about internship placements in 73 countries from recent years. Examples include the Beijing Arbitration Commission, Green Advocates in Liberia, INTERPOL, Supreme Court of Argentina, UN International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, and much more!
PILC funding can be used to participate in several special internship programs including:
• Frank J. Guarani Center for Environmental and Land Use Law Fellowship
• International Law and Human Rights Summer Fellowship
• Center for Constitutional Transitions Summer Fellowship Program
• The Hague Conference on Private International Law Summer
• Ford Foundation Law School Fellowship Program
Counselors in OCS and PILC as well as permanent and visiting faculty also work closely with students to connect them with additional opportunities depending on their individual goals and interests.
Courses in Comparative, Foreign and Transnational Law
NYU’s curriculum offers an extensive array of courses in Comparative and Foreign Law, International Law, and International Litigation and Arbitration. The full-time faculty includes leaders in these fields and is supplemented by members of the Global Faculty drawn from around the world.
Study Abroad Program
The NYU Law Study Abroad Program will give J.D. students the opportunity to spend the Spring semester of their 3L year immersed in the law and legal culture of another part of the world through an academic program designed and administered by the Law School in cooperation with local partners. The proposed study abroad sites are located in Buenos Aires, Paris and Shanghai. The first cohort of students will begin their semester abroad in Spring 2014.
