Accepting an Offer of Admission
Full-time LL.M. Programs
Students admitted to the full-time LL.M. program must submit a non-refundable tuition deposit to reserve their seat in the class. The deposit deadline for those admitted to study in New York City and for those admitted to NYU@NUS will be provided with the letter of admission. In order to accept an offer of admission, we will require you to withdraw from any other offers of admission you have at that point. In the case of NYU@NUS, because of the program’s unique schedule, we also will expect you to withdraw pending applications from all other institutions and not submit any additional applications to other programs.
For both locations, those admitted students who are granted scholarships will be given a shorter interval to respond to our scholarship offer than other admitted students. They additionally will be required to withdraw any pending applications from all other institutions to which they have applied, withdraw from all institutions to which they have been admitted, and not submit any additional applications to other programs in order to accept the scholarship offer.
The Committee on Graduate Admissions understands that many prospective students apply to more than one law school when considering graduate legal studies and may additionally obtain multiple offers of admission, possibly alongside offers of financial assistance. Our scholarship program is intended to assist those students for whom NYU is their first choice. We formerly provided scholarship recipients an extended period of time to determine their enrollment plans. Many immediately accepted the scholarship offer and enrolled in our LL.M. program. Other admitted students took longer to make up their minds and often tried to use the scholarship offer as leverage with other schools to induce them to offer a similar award. Some of these students eventually turned down our award at so late a point that another admitted student, who may have dearly wanted to come to NYU, and for whom a scholarship would have permitted his or her enrollment, was tempted to accept an offer elsewhere. The Committee appreciates and respects the fact that there will be admitted students who receive a scholarship offer from NYU and whose first-choice school will not be NYU. The Committee trusts and hopes that admitted students who receive a scholarship offer from NYU will appreciate and respect its wish that our most coveted awards go to students who feel that NYU is the best fit for their goals and sensibilities and for whom it is in fact their first school of choice. You will understand that we want to give preference to those whose preference is us. The Committee encourages all applicants to consider whether NYU is their school of choice by the time decisions are released. We strongly encourage all applicants to investigate means of financing costs which may not be covered by our scholarship programs, so that they are ready to make an informed decision on their future academic endeavors at the time decisions are released.
